Making Predictions

To predict is to make a guess about what will happen.

Before reading a text, LOOK at its title and any pictures or other illustrations.

The Rules of the Game

Billy and the Bad Baseball Game

✔The passage will likely be a story about a boy having trouble at a baseball game.

It was hot outside, and Billy could feel beads of sweat dripping down his back. It wasn’t just the heat, though. He was nervous. The batter on the other team was up, and as shortstop, Billy knew that he could have to field the ball and make a play at any moment. The bases were loaded, and if he didn’t react well, the other team could score a lot of runs all at once.

The sun beat down on him, and its brightness made it hard for Billy to see. He pulled the brim of his cap down further to shield his eyes. Just then, he heard a sharp crack as the metal bat made contact with the ball. He could barely see the white ball bouncing on the ground. It was coming right toward him. The other team’s runners were on the move. It was up to him to react fast.

✔Billy will not make a good play, and the other team will score.
